This session is in collaboration with IRU

The bus driver shortage in Europe has become a growing issue, significantly impacting public transportation systems across the continent. Factors such as the lack of a highschool or college educational program to become a bus driver, irregular working hours, not enough female drivers, etc. have contributed to the lack of bus drivers. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the problem, with many drivers leaving the industry or retiring early. Additionally, there is a lack of new entrants to the profession, as younger workers are hesitant to join the field. This shortage has led to canceled routes, reduced services, and delays, affecting commuters' daily lives. The European Commission and national governments, in collaboration with the industry are exploring solutions such as promoting gender diversity, simplifying driver licensing, training and recruitment programs -amongst others in third countries and improving working conditions. Without such significant interventions, the crisis could worsen, threatening Europe's public transport network. This session will discuss the pro's and con's of the different regulations and initiatives.
