Electromobility in public transport is developing rapidly—and with it the demands on modern thermal management systems. Double-decker buses are a particular challenge in this regard: large interior volumes, two levels, and wide entry areas make an evenly distributed air conditioning difficult.
Konvekta recognized this challenge very early and created a sustainable solution with the first CO₂ heat pump for electric double-decker buses.
Now comes the optimized follow-up system, which will be available in 2026.
Lighter, more powerful, more efficient
The new generation sets new standards:
• Approx. 100 kg weight reductionthanks to a newly developed compressor
• +25% heating capacity for greater efficiency in winter operation
• +10% cooling capacity for optimal air conditioning in summer
This makes the system even more powerful – while reducing weight and maintaining the usual high level of comfort for drivers and passengers.
Sustainable and future-proof
Like all Konvekta systems, the new double-deck heat pump also uses the natural refrigerant CO₂ (R744).It is PFAS-free, non-flammable, non-toxic, and has a GWP of 1—in contrast to conventional chemical refrigerants, which are many times more harmful to the climate.
In addition, the CO₂ heat pump saves up to 50% energy compared to purely electric heating systems, thus reducing operating costs and significantly increasing the range of the buses.
